Why watercolorists use light outline guides
Sketching freehand on watercolor paper risks heavy graphite lines that bleed through light washes. A printed light outline gives you accurate proportions with zero graphite contamination.
No graphite contamination
Printed outlines contain no graphite to muddy your first wash. The paper stays clean and your pigments stay pure.
Correct proportions from the start
Capturing accurate proportions from a reference photo freehand takes years of practice. The guide handles it so you focus on color, edges, and wet-on-wet technique.
Works on any watercolor paper
Print on regular paper, trace onto your watercolor paper, or print directly if your printer handles watercolor stock.
Watercolor Reference Photo — FAQs
How do I turn a watercolor reference photo into a painting guide?
Upload your reference photo to Sketchso, select the Watercolor preset, and preview the ultra-light outline. The preset automatically sets opacity low enough so lines disappear under watercolor washes. Download HD and print at your paper size to use as your painting guide.
Will the printed outline show through watercolor washes?
No — the Watercolor preset uses non-photo blue lines at very low opacity. These disappear completely under even light washes and don't interfere with your pigment colors.
Can I use this for both wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry watercolor?
Yes. The outline works for both techniques. For wet-on-wet work, use a very light opacity setting. For wet-on-dry with fine detail, you can increase line weight slightly for better visibility during masking.
How do I transfer the outline to my watercolor paper?
Three options: (1) print directly if your printer handles watercolor stock; (2) use a light box to trace the outline from regular paper onto your watercolor paper; (3) use graphite transfer paper between the printout and your watercolor paper.
